A Partnership for Cleaner Air, Safer Whales, and a Quieter Ocean
Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction Program along the coast of California. Eighteen global shipping companies participated May 15 through November 15, 2021, transiting at 10 knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Southern California region. Reducing speeds lowers the risk of ship strikes, uses less fuel, and produces less pollution and ocean noise. The 2022 program is underway, promoting the adoption of sustainable shipping practices across the globe.
