Ins and outs of import-export

Even in a lackluster economy, one Ventura County expert says now’s the time for small tri-county businesses to consider jumping into the international import-export trade.

“U.S. exports are up 18 percent,” said Ray Bowman, who with his wife, Leana, runs Oxnard-based Bowman Business Services. “There are huge opportunities.”

Bowman, who has 20 years of experience in trade logistics, works with clients to find trade opportunities and troubleshoot problems. He categorizes his business as technical trade consulting.

“As much as there has been a bit of a slowdown in importing, the U.S. purchasing market of imports is so huge, Asia really can’t afford to lose us as a customer,” Bowman said. “I think to a large extent prices have stabilized, so you’re not getting the drop you would think because of our economic climate.”
