Ventura County businesses lose phone, Internet service

IN THIS ARTICLE

Scores of Ventura County businesses lost telephone and Internet services July 6 when a Verizon fiber-optic cable went down.

Near Camarillo, California State University, Channel Islands, said the outage knocked out 911 service to the school and residents of University Glen, located in the eastern portion of the campus. The school still had internal calling, but outside calls were blocked.

Also in Camarillo, the Ventura County Agricultural Association said its phone service was knocked out, as was that of a law firm next door. Ventura County Business Bank in Oxnard also lost phone and e-mail service this morning, but President Gerald Lukiewski said some services had been restored by 3 p.m.

The Ventura County Star reported that the outage was due to a damaged fiber-optic cable that disrupted phone, Internet, ATM and 911 services through a swath of the county. A Verizon spokesman told the Star that it could be after 7 p.m. before services were fully restored.
