Fine dining is a family affair
Go to the Plug Nickel Restaurant for lunch during the work-week, and you’ll likely see a lot of suits and ties. The charming Westlake Village restaurant, known for its atmospheric dining, has sat tucked away in the city’s industrial park for 33 years. And now, the family-run business, which takes pride in offering its patrons an escape from the confines of their offices and cubicles, has come under new ownership.
First started in 1975 as a small coffee shop by Dixie Vollmer, the Plug Nickel is now a full-fledged restaurant and catering service. Dixie Vollmer recently passed the business on to her daughter, Valerie Vollmer, who’s been working at the restaurant since she was a child, and who now plans to rebrand both the restaurant and catering service.
“I began just as a gopher running errands, but I worked my way up to waitress and then to manager of the catering service,” Valarie Vollmer said. Last year, mother told daughter that she was planning on selling the Plug Nickel, and Valerie Vollmer thought of all of the potential for the restaurant. So she bought it.
