Fire rips into Fillmore, north Moorpark areas

IN THIS ARTICLE

A nearly 10,000-acre fire was 20 percent contained and had moved from the Fillmore area into northern Moorpark by early Sept. 23, according to the Ventura County Star.

About 600 firefighters had assembled to fight the so-called Guiberson Fire, which started Sept. 22 near Fillmore at East Guiberson and Calumet Canyon roads.

Two outbuildings have been destroyed, four firefighters have been injured and 20 aircraft and nine bulldozers are battling the flames, the Star reported. No homes had been lost as the Business Times went to press.

The fire closed Moorpark College, Campus Canyon School and Walnut Canyon School. “A line of fire can be seen from the north end of campus,” Moorpark College officials said in a release.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Ventura County Sherriff’s officials told the Star that it might have been sparked by the spontaneous combustion of manure on a ranch.
