Tea fire not forgotten a year later
A year ago, the Tea Fire devastated parts of Santa Barbara and Montecito, destroying more than 200 homes and ravaging the landscape.
Twelve months later, homeowners are still regouping and many have not yet decided whether or not to rebuild. Fire remains a threat, one underscored by the Jesusita Fire, which struck the Santa Barbara hillsides just a few months ago.
What is notable is the community’s response to the Tea Fire. Some $434,000 was raised through voluntary donations to help with housing and medical needs and even school supplies.
The Tea Fire Response Fund was a notable effort by Santa Barbara County’s United Way and the final disbursements will be announced Nov. 16.
Through tragedy and adversity, our communities find ways to get stronger.
