Growing a tech business: Ojai
Tri-county agricultural giants such as Gills Onions and Mission Produce ship onions and avocadoes all over the country and are some of the biggest names in the business. But they run on software written by Ojai entrepreneur Bryan Bernard and his small team of programmers.
Bernard’s AgKnowledge software suite is tailored to agribusiness, with the ability to handle contract and market pricing, track growing costs and trace how produce orders get from field to supermarket, in addition to the usual business functions such as accounting.
For the past few years, he’s been migrating it from a server-based model, where the company’s own computers run the program, to a Web-based model. He has about 70 companies on board with the Web version and said he is doing about $1 million in revenue with his staff of six full-timers and three part-timers.
