Navy sails to the rescue of Oxnard hotels
Last year was a dismal year for the region’s hospitality industry, but in Oxnard two Marriott hotels basked in the rays cast out by the nearby naval base.
Even as the region’s tourism industry continued its slump in 2009, with occupancy rates and nightly revenues on the decline, the Residence Inn by Marriott at River Ridge and the Courtyard by Marriott-Oxnard/Ventura could rely on a steady stream of business related to the Naval Base Ventura County.
David Dreher, Marriott’s area general manager, said the two hotels get more than half of their business from stays related to the naval base. That business, which held up through the downturn, helped to insulate the two properties from the hospitality sag, he said.
