Proposal to close Diablo Canyon submitted to California Public Utilities Commission

IN THIS ARTICLE

Parties that drafted the joint proposal to close the Diablo Canyon Power Plant formally submitted it to the California Public Utilities Commission on Aug. 11.

On June 21, Pacific Gas & Electric announced plans to close the aging nuclear power plant near Avila Beach by the end of 2025 and replace power produced by the plant with a portfolio of renewable energy resources. Seven parties drafted the joint proposal, including regional labor unions, environmental groups and PG&E.

PG&E previously delayed submission of the proposal by two weeks to give more time for “positive ongoing discussions” with parties listed in the proposal.

The California State Lands Commission approved a plan to extend two land lease licenses at the plant which will expire when permits for the plant with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission expire in 2025.

Santa Barbara nonprofit World Business Academy sued the lands commission on Aug. 2, saying the commission violated its own rules by not requiring a new environmental review before granting the land lease extensions. The group wants the plant to shut down when the original land permits expire in 2019.
