A felony charge has been reduced to a misdemeanor against a CSU Channel Island professor who was arrested during a July 10 immigration raid at Glass House Farms’ cannabis facility in Camarillo.

Jonathan Caravello, a lecturer in the university’s math department, was taken into custody for allegedly throwing a tear gas canister at U.S. Border Patrol agents during sometimes-violent protests outside the facility.

He pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge at his Aug. 25 arraignment in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles.

The criminal complaint charges him with intentionally and forcibly assaulting, resisting, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with the federal agents.

Caravello, who spent several days in federal custody, is free on $15,000 bail.

His trial is scheduled to start Oct. 14.

Federal agents who raided the Glass House cannabis farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria detained more than 360 people suspected of being undocumented immigrants, authorities said.

During the raid at the Camarillo farm, worker Jaime Alanas Garcia, 57, died after reportedly falling 30 feet.
