Hub 101, California Lutheran University’s startup incubator, is moving from the university’s now-closed Westlake Center satellite campus to the main campus in Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran is shuttering the Westlake Village site to consolidate operations at the home campus due to declining enrollment and a resulting budget deficit.

Mike Panesis, executive director of Cal Lutheran’s Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, of which Hub 101 is a part, told the Business Times Aug. 6 that the incubator will be out of the Westlake Center before its lease expires at the end of August.

He said efforts to find another site off the Cal Lutheran main campus didn’t pan out.

“In discussion with the administration, they would really like to have the Hub 101 vibe and energy back on the main campus,” Panesis said at a small goodbye gathering at the Westlake Center.

“So, we are moving back, not shutting down,” he said.

Hub 101 has been at the Westlake Center since its founding in 2014, Panesis said.

The Dorfman Center has always been at the university’s main campus, he said.

Panesis said it’s currently unknown where Hub 101 will be located on the home campus.

“We don’t have an ETA for a space on the main campus,” he said. “We expect to have clarity in 90 days.”

Panesis said there are some good reasons to move Hub 101 to the home campus.

One is that the Westlake Center is about a 20-minute drive from the main campus and “a lot of our students couldn’t get here.”
