Santa Barbara-based Quintessent raises $40M in Series A

Santa Barbara-based Quintessent, a semiconductor company that specializes in resilient and low-cost AI datacenter optical interconnect products, announced it has raised $40 million in an oversubscribed Series A investment round.

Announced Aug. 24, Quintessent also announced the start of a customer sampling of its single-chip quantum dot-based DWDM comb laser — a new class of light source designed to simplify optical connectivity for rapidly scaling AI clusters, the company said in a press release.

The Series A round was led by Cycle Capital, along with new investors Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Hina Liberty Capital, Susquehanna International Group, InterVest, Safar Partners, and Ciena. Existing investors including Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Osage University Partners, and Sierra Ventures also participated in the round. Quintessent raised $11.5 million in seed funding in 2024.

The money will go toward further maturation of Quintessent’s comb laser, including sampling, reliability/qualification, and ramping up manufacturing. This is the first product in Quintessent’s broader roadmap of optical connectivity technologies spanning enabling components through integrated optical interconnect solutions for AI infrastructure, according to the press release.

“For the past several years, we have focused on building technologies designed to make optical connectivity fundamentally simpler to deploy and scale,” said Alan Liu, co-founder and CEO of Quintessent. “With today’s news, Quintessent is starting its transition from tech development to a product-focused company. We plan to use our investment to accelerate that transition and meet customer demand.”

Quintessent also plans to use part of the proceeds to develop other critically needed optical components — such as semiconductor optical amplifiers — and begin work on an optical engine for high reliability, availability, and serviceability pluggable module interconnect applications within AI data centers, according to the press release.

“AI continues to accelerate data center demand, placing significant pressure on power systems. With its novel quantum dot material and disruptive comb laser design, Quintessent will be instrumental in scaling up data center performance while also reducing energy consumption,” said Andrée-Lise Méthot, founder and managing partner of Cycle Capital.

“Cycle Capital is excited to lead this Series A financing in Quintessent, a company at the intersection of two defining challenges: the rapid growth of AI compute and the need to reduce its energy footprint. This commitment reflects Cycle Capital Fund V’s DeepTech-driven ClimateTech strategy, focused on backing enabling technologies that help meet rising energy demand through scalable innovation.”
